Lumecca IPL (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy)
The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment for dry eyes is a non-invasive, cutting-edge solution for those who suffer from Dry Eyes. This innovative technology uses powerful bursts of light to liquify and release harden oils inside the meibomian glands while reducing inflammation and stimulating the production of natural tears, providing relief from the symptoms of dry eyes, such as itching, redness, and burning. With IPL, you can experience long-lasting relief without the need for surgery and reducing your dependency on daily artificial tears. Whether you spend long hours in front of a computer screen or live in a dry climate, IPL can help you regain the comfort you deserve.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
-
During your IPL treatment, a series of gentle light pulses will be applied to the skin around your eyes, typically beneath the lower eyelids. Protective eye shields may be placed to ensure your eyes remain safe throughout the procedure. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable, describing the sensation as a brief warm snap against the skin. The procedure is relatively quick, usually taking about 15–20 minutes to complete. In some cases, your provider may also perform a gentle expression of the meibomian (oil) glands immediately after the IPL session to help improve the flow of healthy oils into the tear film.
-
IPL treatment requires little to no downtime, and most patients can resume normal activities immediately. Mild redness, warmth, or light sensitivity may occur for a few hours after treatment. Avoid wearing makeup and contact lenses for 24–48 hours, and wear sunglasses outdoors if you experience increased light sensitivity. Your doctor will provide personalized aftercare instructions to support optimal healing and results.

IPL may be a good option for patients who experience chronic dry eye symptoms, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), ocular rosacea, or poor tear quality and tear film instability. It is often recommended for patients whose symptoms persist despite the use of artificial tears, warm compresses, or other conventional treatments. A comprehensive evaluation with our eye doctor is necessary to determine whether IPL is appropriate for your specific condition and treatment goals.
-
Many patients notice improvement after the first or second session, with the best results typically achieved after completing the recommended 4-treatment series. IPL can help improve tear quality, reduce dry eye symptoms, and enhance overall eye comfort. Depending on your condition, periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended to help sustain results. The majority of our patients come in once a year for one maintenance treatment at a reduced rate.
IPL is a safe and well-tolerated treatment when performed by a trained eye care professional. Mild redness, swelling, or temporary light sensitivity may occur but usually resolve quickly. A consultation will determine whether IPL is appropriate for your eye condition, skin type, and medical history.
