Vision coverage and medical coverage are not the same thing
Insurance can be confusing, and it is particularly confusing when a patient has both medical and vision coverage.
Vision insurance
Vision insurance is one of the most misunderstood benefits of all health related coverage. It is the side of your coverage that deals with routine exams, glasses and contact lenses.
Medical insurance
Medical insurance does not cover vision related issues such as routine exams, glasses and contact lenses. It covers the medical side of your eyes.
When a medical concern comes up
Medical concerns take priority, and will be treated first or at the same time as a vision problem. The practice names these as examples:
- Glaucoma
- Dry eyes
- Macular degeneration
- Red eyes
- Floaters
- Allergic conjunctivitis
Before your appointment
We will do everything we can to help you better understand your policy, but the more you know about how it works ahead of time, the less frustrating it will be for you on the day of the exam. Your deductible and your co-pay are the two worth asking your carrier about first.

Paying for your visit
Balances can be settled in the office or through the practice's own secure online portal.
Ask before you come in
Call with your plan in front of you. The office will do everything it can to help you understand what your policy covers, before the day of the exam rather than at the desk.
